High-rev shifting gets easier
2017 - PACE Award Winner
What: One-way transmission clutch
Innovation: Using lighter-weight stamped components in place of machined parts, Schaeffler has created a one-way clutch that allows for smoother shifting with no lurching at high rpms. The innovation is beneficial for rear-wheel vehicles and critical for new 10-speed transmissions.
First Customer: Ford and General Motors
Judge's Citation: The Schaeffler One Way Transmission Clutch Assembly, has made it possible to usher in a new age of fuel-efficient and smooth-operating automatic transmissions for rear drive vehicles. The highly-sophisticated and electronically-controlled 10 speed transmission developed by both Ford Motor and GM required a one way clutch that could operate at 16,000 RPM, have zero backlash, be lower in drag, lighter in weight, and stronger than any clutch on the market. Schaeffler took on the challenge and delivered an innovative design and production process that met all of those requirements. For that effort, their new OWC has become a vital component of the best-selling vehicles in America.
