Pranav Gill, 36
General manager, BMW of Sudbury
Achievement: More than doubled the BMW of Sudbury's net profit between 2012 and 2016.
In 2005, Pranav Gill was fresh out of college, armed with a degree in marketing and awash with interviews for jobs with annual incomes of $30,000 to $40,000. But he wanted more.
So he "went out on a limb," as he puts it, and became an Internet sales associate at Herb Chambers Lexus of Norwood, in Norwood, Mass. The store has since moved to Sharon, Mass., and is now called Herb Chambers Lexus.
Gill put in as many hours as he could, and within a year was the store's Internet sales director.
Today Gill is the general manager of Herb Chambers Cos.' BMW of Sudbury, in Sudbury, Mass.
He took over the store in 2012. By the end of 2016, BMW of Sudbury's net profit had increased 162 percent. It was the group's most profitable dealership in 2015 and 2016. Higher unit sales helped boost service business, he said.
Herb Chambers Cos. ranks No. 17 on Automotive News' list of the top 150 dealership groups based in the U.S., with retail sales of 33,647 new vehicles in 2016. It has 58 dealerships.
Gill attributes his dealership's success to "processes and people."
When he took over the store, he made a point of getting to know each sales and service employee. He customized one-on-one training to help them refocus on the sales process, from the first hello to finalizing the transaction, in an effort to make the process more efficient.
Last year, Gill was named the group's general manager of the year and his store was among 32 of 340 BMW dealerships named as Center of Excellence recipients by BMW of North America. The award recognizes dealerships that excel in business performance and customer service.
"I thrive on success," said Gill. His career goal is to either own a dealership or manage a group of dealerships.
"All of my goals are based on winning," he said. "Chase winning and success will follow."
