MonoLED light source
2016 - PACE Award Winner
What: A standardized, replaceable LED cuts cost
Innovation: Ichikoh has developed an LED that fits into a standardized socket, which lowers cost and allows the replacement of the LED alone. LEDs usually are built into a single module that must be replaced if repairs are needed. The lower cost of the company's MonoLED also makes it more attractive to use LED lamps in vehicles in lower price ranges, not just premium models.
First Customer: Toyota
Judge's Citation: Ichikoh has developed a LED socket (called MonoLED) that can be inserted into a lightening assembly without needing an enclosure. To make the socket viable, Ichikoh created a heat radiation socket using carbon containing resin, resulting in 45% lower cost than standard LED lighting units, 91% smaller in size, 31% lower power consumption, and most importantly, an LED that fits into a traditional automotive bulb socket. The Ichikoh LED socket approach is gaining market share because it is lower cost and because the thermal management solution allows more flexibility in a small form factor.
