Yark Automotive Group
Toledo , OH
Overall Rank for 2012: 68
The people at Yark Chevrolet believe that healthy eating habits start with healthful foods.
The dealership partnered with a local organic farm to bring just-picked fresh fruits and vegetables to employees and dealership customers who buy a share or half-share of the bounty, says John Yark, the dealership's president.
The farm uses no pesticides or herbicides. It uses natural fertilizer and heirloom seeds that have not been genetically altered, says Warren Vess, the dealership's marketing manager.
Every Wednesday, from the first week of June through October, the farm delivers boxes containing fresh produce to the dealership, along with cooking tips.
This year the boxes have contained such goodies as strawberries, zucchini, cabbage, green onions, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, squash and tomatoes.
A half-share box costs $12 a week and easily feeds a family of four; a whole share costs $22 and is more than enough for a family of six. About 60 employees at Yark Automotive Group and about 25 customers participate in the program.
The company also holds health care screenings for employees conducted by an on-site nurse and offers discounted gym memberships. Employees compete for prizes based on the number of steps they take as measured by company-issued pedometers.
Yark says getting the box filled with fresh fruit and vegetables is like getting a Christmas present every week. "You open up the box and there are all kinds of things in there," Yark says. "My family really looks forward to it. Getting top-quality produce right at work is a nice thing for all the employees."
