Overall Rank for 2012: 98
The employees at Gunn Infiniti have a good reason to stay on the job: They work at a dealership where they have an ownership stake, and the longer they stay, the more they own.
The San Antonio dealership -- like other dealerships in Gunn Automotive Group -- maintains a stock ownership program that allows full-time employees to begin accruing stock after a year.
"It's a rarity for sure in the car business," explained Blake George, general manager of Gunn Infiniti. An employee's stock becomes vested after six years on the job, and the dealership also offers its employees tenure bonuses for each five years they spend on the job.
George said that the perquisite, along with a benefits package that includes medical, dental and vision coverage, attracts good employees and keeps them on the job.
But perhaps more important to retaining good employees, George says, is making sure that they receive adequate and regular training to do their jobs properly.
"We try to train instead of replacing," George says.
He also said that if an employee is having difficulty in one area, dealership managers try to find another area at the store that might be a better fit for the employee.
"If there isn't the right fit as a service writer," George said, "but there's some talent there potentially in sales, we try to fit them in instead of cutting them."
