Many dealerships have bird-dog programs -- bonuses that are paid to employees when they refer a new customer or a job candidate to the dealership.
Gunn Honda in San Antonio has a slightly different take, though, when current employees help steer a successful job candidate to the dealership, explains General Manager Mark Hennigan. The dealership pays half of a bird-dog bonus, what Hennigan said is "hundreds" of dollars, when the person gets hired and the other half if the new hire is still on the job six months later.
"They're very involved because there's money involved," Hennigan says. "If the new person is hired in the same [Gunn] store, the employee who referred them has a financial interest in making sure that they succeed in the store."
Gunn Honda has programs that reward full-time employees with benefits such as tenure bonuses and an employee stock ownership plan as part of Gunn Automotive Group.
The bonus system is one small factor in making Gunn Honda a good place to work. More important, Hennigan says, is the dealership's commitment to training all employees properly for their jobs and making sure they understand their responsibilities.
"The reason people fail is that they either don't understand what's expected of them or don't know their job description," Hennigan says. "If you make sure they understand and that they're accountable, they really are happier. They're very well aware of what their job entails, and we try to give them every tool we can to make them succeed."
