George Matick Chevrolet
Redford , MI
Overall Rank for 2012: 75
Women account for about 40 percent of the management team at George Matick Chevrolet.
It's no accident.
President Karl Zimmermann says the store long has actively recruited women for executive and nonmanagement roles.
"Women are a big part of our customer base, so it makes sense that we'd have a concerted effort to recruit them," he says. "I joke that half of the cars are bought by women, and about 75 percent of the rest are decided on by women."
The recruitment efforts often start with Molly Williams, the store's longtime general manager. She has made her pitch to would-be employees at restaurants, on the sidelines of kids' soccer games -- even at parent-teacher association meetings. Williams recruited a female PTA president to be the store's human resources manager.
Matick's controller and business-development coordinator also are women. And it employs a female collision estimator, two female service advisers and two saleswomen.
Occasionally, the store allows certain employees to work a compressed workweek -- a rarity in the automotive retail business. An assistant office manager who recently had her second baby works four 10-hour days.
Recruitment is only part of the formula, Williams says. The entire 101-person staff fosters "a team environment that's fun and where everyone is treated with mutual respect."
