Friendship Family of Dealerships
Friendship Hyundai of Johnson City
Johnson City , TN
Overall Rank for 2012: 58
A visitor to east Tennessee's Friendship Hyundai of Johnson City shouldn't be surprised to walk in and find operating partner Dustin Walters doing push-ups in the store showroom. In the dealership's spirited work environment, push-ups and sit-ups are the currency for work challenges. The store, which opened in 2006, has a youthful employee group of 30 who often challenge their managers and one another to work goals that center on fitness.
It meshes with the store's health-conscious culture. Friendship's wellness program reimburses employees who maintain healthy lifestyle practices. The effort also extends to a "family challenge" to encourage employees' family members to adopt healthier lifestyles. To help employees and their families stop smoking, the dealership reimburses half the cost of a cessation program -- a significant effort in the tobacco-growing east Tennessee region.
The dealership also awards employees for walking daily, with a prize for meeting a "10,000 steps a day" challenge. It also encourages weight-loss program participants with prizes, cash and trips.
Friendship's work environment results in a relaxed team atmosphere. The dealership boasts a company football team and also holds employee cookouts and other outdoor events. Employees raise money for the local Boys & Girls Club and also support CASA for Children, a national child-advocacy program.
Although the ambience is relaxed and a bit playful, showroom and office employees typically can be found well-dressed in business suits and neckties. That is not a mandatory dress code but a culture that has grown out of emulating Walters, a sharp-dressed general manager in a world of khakis and polos. The exception is Friday, when backroom staffers don matching T-shirts that read "I love my job."
