Linda Taggart, 58
Group VP and Chief Information Officer, GMAC Financial Services, General Motors
Education: B.A., mathematics, Dunbarton College
First automotive job: Current position
Proudest achievement: "Creating the Electronic Commerce Technology Strategy for GM and GMAC."
On being successful: "In my organization at GMACFS, I have been able to bring together some very creative and strong managers. I have focused my team on the company's top priorities and have ensured that all of our employees understand our goals and have a clear sense of direction. I believe that with the right team, clear direction and strong leadership, we can achieve even the hardest of goals."
On being a woman in the industry: "Many times in previous positions, I have been one of a small number of women or, in some cases, the only woman, in a senior role. Here at GM I have several female counterparts, and I feel that we bring different strengths and perspectives to the job. Diversity in the workplace is essential if we are to be successful. It is necessary in all areas of the company that we encourage the hiring of women and minorities to ensure that our structure reflects society's. If we do not make this a priority, we will not be as successful as other companies who see the effect of a diverse, multitalented work force."
