Volvo hops on Tesla's North American Supercharger network

Volvo Cars is the latest automaker to jump on the Tesla Supercharger bandwagon.

The Swedish automaker on Tuesday said its electric vehicle customers will have access to Tesla's 12,000 Superchargers across North America.

Starting in 2025, Volvo electric vehicles in the region will also be equipped with the North American Charging Standard port, allowing the EVs to plug into the Supercharger network.

Volvo plans to go all electric globally by 2030. The brand's Recharge line of battery electric and plug-in hybrid models accounted for 27 percent of U.S. sales last year.

Over the past several weeks, Tesla has inked similar deals with Ford Motor Co., General Motors and Rivian.

Volvo Cars Chief Commercial Officer Bjorn Annwall said improving the charging experience is a "high priority" for the brand.

"Our aspiration is to make sure we, as soon as possible, [have a] great charging experience for ... customers," Annwall said at a media event in Milan in early June. "You can have it via the Tesla network, you can have it via some of the other networks."

Annwall noted that Tesla has the "best premium experience with fast charging."

Tesla has the biggest fast-charge network in the U.S., with more than 17,000 individual chargers in the Supercharger network, according to iSeeCars. Networks using the Combined Charging System, such as Electrify America and EVgo, have about 11,500 fast chargers.

Tesla's network has been rated as more reliable by independent studies and is growing considerably faster than competing networks.

CEO Elon Musk has said Tesla is willing to open the Supercharger infrastructure to rivals to spur EV adoption, which will help all automakers.

Tesla's senior director of charging infrastructure, Rebecca Tinucci, said the agreements show the industry is converging around the North American Charging Standard, which will improve charging for all EV users.

"We're collectively ensuring all EV drivers have access to easy to use, reliable charging hardware," Tinucci said in a previous press release.
