A collection of more than 200 General Motors classic cars is going up for auction this week.
Muscle Car City, a museum that Rick Treworgy opened 14 years ago in Punta Gorda, Fla., is shutting down. Treworgy, who housed his collection in a former Walmart, moved up his planned retirement after visitor traffic dried up during the pandemic.
Mecum Auctions is putting most of Treworgy's cars, considered one of the biggest and best GM collections in the world, up for bids Jan. 22 and 23 with no-reserve prices.
The collection includes more Corvettes than the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky, plus numerous Impalas, El Caminos, Novas, Chevelles and Camaros. Treworgy, who bought his first car at age 14, says it's tough to let everything go, though he plans to keep about 50 of his favorites at his home.
"These cars are physical things you shouldn't care about," he told The Drive, "but when you collect, you do."
