GM EVs gain access to Tesla Superchargers — with $225 adapter

Owners of General Motors electric vehicles now can plug in at Tesla's Superchargers using an adapter.

The automaker on Sept. 18 said it has opened access to Tesla's EV charging network of more than 17,800 Superchargers, starting with U.S. customers and expanding into Canada this year. GM EV owners need to purchase a $225 adapter to access Tesla's chargers. The Tesla-designed North American Charging Standard connector eventually will be built into future GM EVs.

Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac EV owners can buy adapters through their brand mobile app, which also can be used to find Superchargers, check availability and pay for charging, GM said. Buick does not yet sell an EV in the U.S.

"This will make it available for all our customers to then be able to download the app, order their adapter, once they receive their adapter to be able to start utilizing the Supercharger network," Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy, told Automotive News. "We're extremely excited about it."

Last year, GM CEO Mary Barra said the automaker had reached a deal with Tesla opening the Supercharger network to GM EVs as early as this spring. GM EVs use the Combined Charging System connector, which makes an adapter necessary to plug into Tesla's network.

The automaker intends to build the NACS port into its EVs as soon as the 2026 model year, Sheffer said.

Ford Motor Co., which announced its deal to access Tesla's charging network shortly before GM did last year, is allowing consumers to reserve a NACS adapter for free through Sept. 30. After that, or if customers want more than one, the cost is $230.

Sheffer said GM opted to make the adapter available for purchase to all customers to enable a level playing field.

"At the end of the day, what we felt is it was very important to ensure that our customers are treated equally, and that all customers would have that ability to go and download the app and be able to ascertain that adapter at a reasonable and fair price," he said.

Dealers can help EV buyers get an adapter, including during the vehicle purchase, Sheffer said.
