TURNERSVILLE, N.J. — The team crisscrossing the large showroom floor at Nissan of Turnersville was loose and relaxed early on a hot and sunny September Saturday morning, getting ready for the weekend rush.
But not too loose and relaxed.
Even as a closed-door meeting progressed for salespeople and managers just before the store's opening, a service customer wandered into the showroom to kill time. One after another, at least a half dozen employees — workers who'd been moving cars, technicians and then sales reps after their meeting broke up — stopped to ask whether he was being helped.
They each listened patiently to the customer's accounting of why he was in for service and finished by offering him coffee or a cold bottle of water. These interactions pleased dealership boss John Fanelli when he heard about them later.
"That's good; that's the way it should be," said Fanelli, general manager of Nissan of Turnersville — No. 1 among medium dealerships on the 2018 Automotive News list of the 100 Best Dealerships To Work For. "I consider myself a salesperson, and I think we're all salespeople."
Fanelli said he puts a lot of emphasis on rewarding performance and building camaraderie at the dealership, one of 24 Penske Automotive Group stores to make this year's list. Nissan of Turnersville is part of the Turnersville AutoMall, a sprawling Penske property outside Philadelphia housing 10 franchises.
