Hlavenka on changes to recruitment:
"We make sure all our recruiting efforts acknowledge that we are a Best Dealership To Work For four years running. I've also created business cards that are handed out to anyone we encounter in our lives that impress us with their customer service and communication skills."
Hlavenka on rewarding employees and showing them they are valued:
"Our partners frequently provide us tickets to events and shows, and we reward employees with these in addition to our comp plans when we feel an employee went above and beyond. We also randomly give gift cards, buy coffee or lunch when online reviews show an employee went above and beyond."
Hlavenka on helping employees develop a career path:
"During our interview and hiring process, we try to get a clear definition of the path the employee would like to take. During employment, we cross-train and guide them along the path."
Hlavenka on making work schedules more balanced or flexible:
"We staff appropriately and offer flexibility. Some of our employees do choose to work the traditional bell-to-bell schedule but are not required to."
Hlavenka on compensation:
"We promote a team atmosphere and get buy-in from everyone that every department is as important as the one they work in. On a management level, we have shifted over the years to paying on overall store performance. Most recently, I've now factored expenses into their compensation. I adjusted percentages to compensate so if gross and expense stay the same, compensation stays the same. This allows them to give themselves a raise without selling or servicing any more cars. For sales reps, we have shifted to larger flats, and bonuses based more on volume and customer service satisfaction."
