Capitol Auto Group COO/CFO Bob Myers, left, and Sales Manager Kelly Stewart got into the spirit for a Groundhog Day fundraising event for the United Way. More than $175,000 was raised in February.

    Salem, Ore.

    Dealer:

    Scott Casebeer

    Dealership group:

    Capitol Auto Group

    Full-time employees:

    163

    2017 new-vehicle sales:

    2,186, up 5.2%

    2017 used-vehicle sales:

    1,226, down 7.8%

Customer Relations Director Charley Engelfried on changes to recruitment:

"We are looking at more customer-relations-type individuals for our sales teams and service writer positions. We have also started using temp agencies to give ourselves and the prospective employee a chance to see how they fit into our culture. We also offer an $800 referral bonus to current employees who bring us someone and they are hired and last a minimum of 90 days."

Marketing Director Carrie Casebeer on rewarding employees and showing them they are valued:

"We hold monthly informational meetings where top performers in both our sales and service departments are recognized as our Capitol Toyota Remarkable Employees of the Month as voted by the management team. Each recognized employee gets a gift certificate for dinner, photo wall plaque and is entered into our Employee of the Year program, where the winner receives a two-night stay anywhere in Oregon and cash. We recognize employees in our company newsletter and on our company website. We also hold events throughout the year, including barbecues, holiday gatherings and departmental outings."

Brian Schindler, director of business development, on helping employees develop a career path:

"We offer to pay for any education class they might want to take as well as offer multiple in-house training opportunities. We encourage promoting from within — over 80 percent of current management has been with Capitol Toyota for over five years."

General Manager Matthew Casebeer on making work schedules more balanced or flexible:

"Capitol Toyota has become more open to flexible scheduling. This includes job-sharing for our support staff and more part-time positions available for our sales staff, allowing for better scheduling options for those employees with young families and children in school. This allows them to complete their work later in the evening or on the weekend. We also provide iPads and laptop computers to complete work from outside locations."

    Matthew Casebeer on compensation:

"We start all new salespeople with a $3,000-a-month guarantee for the first 90 days. This allows them to learn before having to talk to our customers. We also are a salary-based dealership with commission opportunities based on sales and customer satisfaction scores."
