Woods on recruitment:
"We have an award-winning, friendly staff, which creates the desire for applicants to want to join our team."
Woods on rewarding employees and showing them they are valued:
"Plaques; trophies; trips to neighboring Hawaiian islands, trips to Las Vegas; lunch every Saturday; cash bonuses; five-year increment awards with gift cards; Christmas party; concert tickets; and much more"
Woods on helping employees develop a career path:
"I conduct goal-setting workshops; the steps that lead to advancement. I mentor. I have promoted many employees internally. I know my staff and focus on a positive environment using my 32 years of experience. I started as a salesperson and worked my way up, raised a family and purchased homes, coached soccer while running dealerships. Therefore, I have a lot of input to guide and assist my team. I also incorporate business trainers' philosophies."
Woods on making work schedules more balanced or flexible:
"We have gone away from the traditional 'team schedule,' and we have individual schedules. Some are morning people, and some are night owls — the schedule is adjusted to meet our staff's lifestyle and conduct business appropriately."
Woods on compensation:
"We revise the pay plan consistently (sometimes monthly). The idea is to keep it motivating and focused on the store's needs. The pay plan, even with revisions, is not against the salesperson's favor; the bonuses are modified to focus achievement in areas that we are focused on during a particular month. We pay out a lot of bonus money and cash spiffs."
