TO THE EDITOR:
I read "Tenneco's goal: Let those EVs rumble!" (Aug. 6) with interest. The article states: "Tenneco engineers have created a prototype system that uses a smaller, standardized muffler that has a speaker enclosed in a sphere alongside the tailpipe."
I am unaware of any EVs that have a tailpipe because there are no emissions. I presented a paper at the Electric Vehicle Symposium in May 2012 in Los Angeles that describes a pedestrian warning system for hybrids and EVs that has much in common with what Tenneco is developing.
