Polestar, Volvo's luxury electric vehicle unit, named Gregor Hembrough chief of its U.S. operations, continuing the carmaker's strategy of seeding its new ventures with in-house talent. Hembrough most recently was a vice president at Volvo Cars North America overseeing the northeast and western regions.
"The chance to launch a progressive new car company like Polestar is a dream opportunity," Hembrough said in a statement.
With Polestar, Volvo aims to clearly differentiate itself in the luxury EV market dominated by German rivals and Tesla Inc. The brand's first model, the plug-in hybrid Polestar 1, debuted in China last year and was shown at the Geneva auto show in March.
According to Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath, speaking at the Automotive News Europe Congress last month, a majority of deposits on the flagship model come from U.S. customers.
