A Hurst/Olds Cutlass paces the 58th Indianapolis 500 on May 26, 1974.
With the success of Hurst components on the Oldsmobile 442, Oldsmobile, in collaboration with Hurst Performance of Warminster, Pa., produced special-edition performance versions of the 442, Cutlass and Cutlass Supreme, under the Hurst/Olds badge.
The 1974 pace car featured a 455-cubic-inch Rocket V-8 that produced 230 hp.
It was the second appearance (after 1972) for the Hurst/Olds Cutlass as Indy 500 pace car. Starting in 1949 with the 88, Oldsmobile provided the Indy 500 pace car for 11 races.
The 1974 pace car with so-called colonnade body styling, was driven by 1960 Indy 500 winner Jim Rathmann. Rathmann and Sam Hanks hold the record for most appearances as official driver of the Indianapolis 500 pace car with six apiece.
