Lexus will offer UX crossover with subscription option

DALLAS -- The U.S. version of the Lexus UX subcompact crossover will debut at the New York auto show this week with Apple CarPlay connectivity, Amazon's Alexa voice assistant and the brand's first subscription option as an alternative to buying or leasing the vehicle.Lexus, however, didn't offer any details on how the subscription service would operate in a press release Monday."When the UX goes on sale in December of 2018, there will be a new option in addition to the usual purchase and lease processes," Lexus said. "For the first time in the history of Lexus, the UX will be offered through a subscription service. Details will be announced closer to the UX on-sale date."The UX will also be the first Lexus vehicle to come with CarPlay, a popular feature that allows smartphone applications to be accessed from the vehicle's infortainment screen. Lexus and corporate stablemate Toyota are late to offer Apple's proprietary smartphone integration, a popular feature among consumers.The UX will also feature Alexa integration, "so UX drivers can asked Alexa to play music and media, read Kindle books, control smart home devices and more," Lexus said. Both Lexus and Toyota are still working with Google to bring Android Auto to its products, executives have said.
