Copart Inc. plans a 36-acre expansion of its San Antonio salvage auction. But first it has to clear the site of an estimated 1 million discarded tires.
Copart, of Dallas, bought the former Safe Tire Disposal Corp. facility, the site of enforcement actions by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, which had received complaints from residents that the site was a fire hazard and allowed the breeding of Zika-infected mosquitoes.
In an email, Copart said it had hired a Texas company to remove all tires from the site and "send them to an authorized facility or authorized facilities in compliance with applicable law."
Calling the acquisition "a win-win for Copart and for the state of Texas," Copart CEO Jay Adair said, "This is not just good business for Copart, it's also good environmental stewardship. It's the right thing to do."
