The National Automobile Dealers Association chose Texas dealer Charlie Gilchrist to be its 2018 vice chairman, putting him in line to be chairman in 2019.
Gilchrist, 61, represents Northern Texas' new-car dealers on NADA's board and is president of Southwest Ford in Weatherford, Texas, and a Buick-GMC, Nissan and Mitsubishi dealer.
The group's 63-member board of directors elected Gilchrist its board meeting in Dana Point, Calif., on Tuesday.
As expected, Michigan dealer and current Vice Chairman Wes Lutz, 63, was elected to succeed Illinois dealer and current Chairman Mark Scarpelli, 53.
Bill Willis, president of Willis Automotive Group in Smyrna, Del., was re-elected as the association's secretary. Bob Shuman, president of Shuman Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram in Walled Lake, Mich., was elected treasurer.
Lutz is president of Extreme Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep-Ram in Jackson, Mich., which is about 80 miles west of Detroit. He said he will continue advocating for new-car dealers, while encouraging dealers to adapt to the challenges ahead. He represents Michigan's new-car dealers on NADA's board.
Lutz, a University of Michigan graduate, has been a dealer since 1976. He was a Time Dealer of the Year for Michigan in 2009.
NADA represents about 16,500 domestic and foreign new-vehicle dealerships.
