Never in the history of the auto industry in this country has a natural disaster caused as much devastation to car dealers as the hurricane that struck Houston.
The National Automobile Dealers Association created a special fund for employees of dealerships that has already run out — at least temporarily.
Now the industry will have to figure out what to do with a massive number of flood-damaged vehicles.
Once the water has receded, more than 500,000 water-damaged vehicles will have to be disposed of. Add this to the tens of thousands of VW diesels still sitting in lots all over the nation and it becomes obvious there will be a glut of vehicles in our marketplace — some legal and some not.
The VW vehicles will be legally sold once their emissions are straightened out. But the flood-damaged vehicles from the hurricane will need to be scrapped or labeled as flood-damaged for all to see, with an adjusted title.
