Jeff Parent, president of Houston-based vehicle and parts distributor Gulf States Toyota, told Automotive News that the company and the dealers it serves got mostly lucky in the wake of Harvey.
Q: How bad is this for Gulf States Toyota, dealers and their families?
A: Everything we've heard so far is that everyone who works at a Toyota dealer is safe. We may have some reports later on, but right now most associates are present and accounted for and safe. At least 15 percent of those associates are displaced [from their homes] in some way.
Are there any problems with inventory?
I think the great news out of where we are as a company right now is our vehicle processing center and our parts distribution center are largely undamaged. The other piece of good news — and this is kind of remarkable — is that for dealers from Houston down to Corpus Christi, none of those dealers had any real storm damage. ... Maybe four or five cars lost. Now I know we've lost some inventory east of the city, but compared to flooding in Baton Rouge a year ago, we got really lucky.
