Mazda, Mitsubishi and Subaru may be Japan's Little 3, but they're well on top of the industrywide trends toward light trucks and electrification.

This includes a diesel CX-5 and the introduction of its homogeneous charge compression ignition, or HCCI, technology, in 2019 that could yield big fuel efficiency gains.
In light trucks, Mitsubishi and Subaru have big moves planned to plug holes. Mitsubishi adds the new Eclipse Cross compact crossover and positions the next-gen Outlander and Outlander Sport on either side of it, while Subaru adds its long-awaited Ascent three-row crossover.
Mazda retains its three-crossover setup and could add the CX-4 from China as an upmarket crossover entry.
