As a service technician, I agree that we need younger talent entering the industry (“Wrenches to laptops,” June 2017). But I don’t think things are as bad as people have been saying.
The days of needing technicians to perform repairs and diagnosis on vehicles are coming to an end. The future will require parts changers who will plug in modules and flash them.
I also believe that there will be regional service centers; few, if any, independent garages; and few to no chains in operation. It stands to reason that if fewer technicians are needed, there will be fewer jobs.
