BMW has announced that, like the rest of us, it doesn't have the slightest idea what is going to happen in the next few decades regarding vehicle powerplants.
It's a real crapshoot. But at least BMW is smart enough to admit that it does not know, and so it is trying to maintain its flexibility.
BMW is planning combustion, hybrid and electric versions of its key nameplates and will make them all capable of rolling off the same assembly line.
Make no mistake, in the next couple of decades, several countries will outlaw gasoline and diesel fuel. But chances are, there will be plenty of places where petroleum is still the fuel of choice. Indeed, it would seem very difficult to rein in the use of petroleum for commercial heavy-duty trucks.
So if we thought things were complicated now, imagine what it will be like when the world is a hodgepodge of laws and regulations based on the political persuasion of who's in charge at the time.
