Ben Hayden, 22, came of age during the Great Recession. He has vivid memories of his father fretting he’d lose his job and his mother worrying they’d miss the mortgage payment.
“There was a lot of fear,” said Hayden, inventory manager at Germain Honda of Ann Arbor in Michigan.
The trepidation of the time imprinted a drive to succeed on Hayden’s psyche.
“My biggest takeaway is: The more you learn, the more valuable you are, and you want to be valuable in a workplace,” said Hayden. “I’m hoping if anything bad ever happened again in the economy my importance in my job would keep me safe.”
