Subaru adds 2 STI models for '18

Subaru of America will add two limited-run variants under its STI performance line for 2018.

The 2018 WRX STI Type RA builds on the WRX STI’s 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine by adding a cold-air intake and high-flow performance exhaust, improving horsepower to an estimated 310, Subaru said.

The RA designation, standing for “record attempt,” is a nod to past Subaru performance models. The automaker hopes to set a speed record this summer with a race model dubbed the WRX STI Type RA NBR Special.

As an appearance upgrade, the Type RA adds a carbon fiber roof panel, a carbon fiber pedestal wing and 19-inch forged alloy wheels. It uses a Cherry Blossom Red accent around the grille and rear bumper cover.

The 2018 BRZ tS, which designates tuning by the company’s Subaru Tecnica International engineering division, features STI- branded performance equipment including a rear carbon fiber spoiler, as well as front, rear and side underspoilers, and rides on 18-inch wheels, a first for a BRZ. The BRZ also uses Cherry Blossom Red accenting around the grille and rear bumper cover.

Subaru improved the front and rear dampers and coil springs, while adding draw stiffeners to the chassis and subframe to improve steering response.

Both models will be available in three colors — WR Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Silica and Crystal White Pearl. Limited to 500 units each, the models are to arrive at dealerships in early 2018. Pricing has not been announced.
