Compared with the Tesla Model S sedan, which starts at $68,000 before tax credits, the Air is a bargain. The Air will have a 240-mile range and 400 hp, according to Lucid, compared with the base 210-mile range and 382 hp of the Model S. Other options of the Air increase range up to 400 miles and power up to 1,000 hp.
Lucid is taking $2,500 deposits for the Air. The company says it plans to start production in the first half of 2019 and build 10,000 units in the first year. Lucid declined to disclose the number of deposits placed thus far.
The introduction of the Air will be a milestone for Lucid, which was founded in 2007 as Atieva. Now a 330-person operation, Lucid is trying to enter a field in which only Tesla has found success.
