CDK Global named Ron Frey, a former executive at TrueCar and AutoNation, executive vice president and chief strategy officer.
Frey, 51, who is replacing the retiring Malcom Thorne, will join the company in April. CDK said Frey will “oversee corporate strategy, business development, and product management as we continue our focus on delivering the kinds of innovative products and services that dealers need to grow and manage their businesses.”
He began his automotive career in 1985 when he founded a full-service auto-buying company that became a leading program for credit unions. Frey sold the service to TrueCar in 2005 and joined the third-party site as a partner and COO.
Frey moved on to AutoNation Direct in 2007, where he was tasked with developing and testing new transactional sales initiatives outside of the traditional store environment. The work of AutoNation Direct eventually led to the creation of AutoNation Express, the dealer group’s digital sales solution that connected to in-store operations.
AutoNation later promoted Frey to chief strategy officer.
In October, Frey was appointed chief strategy officer of lending technology and automotive solutions provider CU Direct. His job there was to “oversee the planning and direction of automotive solutions as it relates to product and market expansion,” according to CU Direct.
"I am pleased to be joining CDK Global at a time when the automotive retail experience is evolving rapidly and dealers need innovative solutions," Frey said in a statement. "CDK is in a unique position to help our dealers utilize technology and data to better serve the needs of today's auto-buying consumers."
