To the Editor:
Keith Crain's role of white knight in calling out Tesla is misguided ("Tesla should play by the rules," Oct. 10).
The Detroit mafia is afraid of competition and has lobbied effectively to keep Tesla out unless it plays by the rules, which it will not. Has it occurred to Crain that maybe the rules need changing?
Many other states and Ontario are OK with the direct-sales model as a reasonable alternative to dealerships -- so what's Michigan's problem?
Dealerships make a lot of money servicing vehicles. However, electric cars require little servicing, so the dealership model is not viable.
Tesla's statement about not manufacturing in hostile jurisdictions is not blackmail. Would you want to live in an unfriendly neighborhood?
As a Tesla owner, I appreciate Tesla's no-pressure environment and superior customer service. It's a shame that Michigan residents are denied the same opportunity.
Almost 400,000 orders for the Model 3 say a lot. Maybe the old-line manufacturers have something to learn.
