Capitol Chevrolet-Cadillac of Salem, from 2012-14, placed no worse than seventh on the Automotive News list of 100 Best Dealerships To Work For. In 2013, it was the top-ranked large dealership and third overall.
Then last year, the Oregon store fell to 47th. Owner Scott Casebeer and his family were concerned by the sudden drop and thought about what more their employees might be looking for.
"We are a big contributor to our local community, and one of the things people had been asking for was time to volunteer," said Matthew Casebeer, Scott's son and a member of the dealership's executive team. "So we started "A Day of Giving,' where every employee has the opportunity to volunteer for eight hours for a nonprofit each year."
The volunteer time doesn't count toward the employees' regular vacation allotment, giving them a day to serve their community while the store pays them.
The extra perk seems to have gone over well. For 2016, the first year of the new program, Capitol Chevrolet-Cadillac is again No. 1 among large dealerships.
In addition, it's one of just eight dealerships to appear on the list all five years the awards have been given. Capitol Toyota, right next door, is also a five-timer.
