"I would recommend working here to a friend."
It is, perhaps, the ultimate endorsement of an employer. At dealerships that applied for but didn't make this year's list of the 100 Best Dealerships To Work For, 88 percent of employees agree with that statement. Not bad at all.
In contrast, though, 98 percent of employees at this year's 100 Best Dealerships agree with that statement. That 10-point difference is part of what separates the best from the rest.
Within the best, the responses from employees of large, medium and small dealerships varied much less. On the question of whether they'd recommend working at their store to a friend, the "agree somewhat" and "agree strongly" responses came to 99 percent of employees at small dealerships, 98 percent of employees at medium dealerships and 97 percent of employees at large dealerships.
The definitions: Small means 25 to 49 employees; medium, 50 to 99; and large, 100 or more.
Consider this statement: "I am willing to give extra effort to help this dealership succeed." At dealerships that applied for but didn't make the list, the agree response rate was 94 percent. At large and medium dealerships on the list: 99 percent.
And at the small dealerships on this list, a perfect 100 percent of employees agreed.
Or look at it from the negative side. As human resources experts know, employees don't quit companies, they quit bosses. So Best Companies Group asked employees to comment on relations with their supervisors, asking them to agree or disagree with statements such as "My supervisor treats me fairly," "My supervisor is open to hearing my opinion or feedback" and "My supervisor handles my personal issues satisfactorily." Aggregating the responses, the average dealership that didn't make the list had a 90 percent positive score, vs. 97 percent at large dealerships and 98 percent at both small and medium dealerships.
Bottom line: The employees of the dealerships on this year's list -- large, medium and small -- like their store, feel good about their supervisor and therefore are ready to go the extra mile.
