The 2018 Equinox, unveiled aptly on Sept. 22, will be the first compact crossover offered in North America with a turbocharged diesel engine, General Motors said. The diesel will help Chevrolet as it begins selling the Equinox in about 115 new markets vs. North America only today.
The Equinox, last redesigned in 2009, has been a workhorse for GM and its second most popular U.S. nameplate, after the Chevy Silverado. But despite a refresh last year, sales are down 18 percent this year through August.
The redesigned model will be 4 inches shorter and 400 pounds lighter than the outgoing model but offer more interior space and a choice of three turbocharged engines. It reaches North American dealerships in the first quarter of next year.
