A Ford Motor Co. employee was shot and killed this morning in the parking lot outside the Kansas City Assembly Plant, which makes the F-150 pickup and Transit van.
The shooting occurred around 4:07 a.m. local time during a shift change at the plant in Claycomo, Mo., Capt. Will Akin of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.
Police later identified the victim as Brandon Nunnally, 26, of Kansas City.
Akin said police are following leads to find the shooter. He called the incident “isolated” and said there “is no danger to employees who are there now.”
A Ford spokesman said the plant is operating normally and described the shooter as an “intruder” not affiliated with the automaker.
“Our management team is cooperating with the Sheriff’s department on the investigation of this isolated incident,” Ford said in a statement. “Law enforcement has confirmed there are no further safety concerns as the plant has been secured.”
The UAW’s Ford Department said in a Facebook post that it was made aware of the incident and that local union leaders are “working with authorities” at the plant.
“UAW-Ford would like to extend sincere condolences to the family of the victim,” the department wrote.
Officials with UAW Local 249, which represents workers at the Kansas City plant, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Nearly 7,500 workers are employed at the 4.7 million-square-foot plant, according to Ford’s website.
It was the second known shooting incident involving Ford hourly workers this summer. In June, two UAW local officials who represent workers at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant were wounded outside the Local 551 union hall. William Cowart, 50, was arrested and charged with eight counts of attempted murder. He pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
