A former NFL running back died after accidentally shooting himself at a dealership service department in suburban Detroit on Tuesday.
Mark DeMara, general manager at Mike Riehl’s Roseville Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram in Roseville, Mich., said the incident occurred between 9 and 9:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday.
Fox 2 in Detroit and The Detroit News reported that the victim was Zurlon Tipton, a running back who played football for Central Michigan University and the Indianapolis Colts. He was 26.
Tipton parked his Jeep Wrangler at the service department and went to get a duffel bag from his vehicle.
When he was going through the bag, a pistol discharged, striking the customer in the stomach area, DeMara and Roseville police said.
The bag contained two guns, police said.
Tipton was taken to a hospital but later died, the police said.
DeMara said the dealership blocked off the service area after the incident and didn’t allow customer access while the police, fire department and ambulances arrived.
No other injuries were reported.
“It’s just an unfortunate accident,” DeMara said.
The area was opened back up by 10:30 a.m. ET, he said.
A phone call to Roseville Police Chief James Berlin was not immediately returned.
