Fiat Chrysler has released a free software package that will allow owners of certain 2013-15 vehicles equipped with its Uconnect infotainment system to integrate the Apple iPhone’s Siri Eyes Free feature into their vehicles.
The software update can be downloaded and installed by consumers themselves. When installed, the software allows consumers to access Siri -- Apple’s voice-recognition system -- by pressing and holding the voice recognition button on their steering wheel.
FCA says nearly 2 million of its 2013-15 vehicles equipped with the automaker’s 8.4-inch touch screen infotainment system can accept the software upgrade if consumers choose to install it.
The vehicles eligible are:
- 2013-15 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500, and Dodge Viper
- 2014-15 Dodge Durango, Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee
- 2015 Dodge Challenger and Charger, Jeep Renegade, Chrysler 200 and Chrysler 300
“By adding Siri Eyes Free capability, customers will be able to use their voice to dictate and send messages, select specific songs, create reminder notifications and set calendar entries,” Tricia Hecker, FCA’s global head of connected services, said in a written statement.
The software and installation instructions for Siri Eyes Free are available at www.driveuconnect.com/software-update. A step-by-step instruction video is also available, or consumers can ask dealers to perform the update.
