“Saturday Night Live” last week unveiled a (faux) commercial for the Mercedes-Benz AA class, an electric luxury sedan entirely powered by AA batteries. Mercedes played along.
The parody ad, featuring SNL host and “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, imagines a world where electric-car drivers are no longer bogged down by nuisances such as long charging times.
“No more plugs, no more charging stations,” Louis-Dreyfus says. “Just 9,648 AA batteries.”
It’s a slickly produced ad that would feel right at home alongside Mercedes’ real advertisements were it not for the absurd specifications and features it highlights, including a top speed of 52 mph and a “ribbon-release auto-dump feature” that disposes of all the car’s batteries.
The real Mercedes-Benz had some fun with the spoof on Twitter, posting a photo of a “complimentary recharging station” for up to four AA batteries.

This isn’t the first time “SNL” has had fun with auto commercials. The show utilized Jim Carrey’s comedic skills to spoof Lincoln’s Matthew McConaughey ads in 2014, while longtime “SNL” fans might remember Phil Hartman hawking the 1993 Chameleon XLE, a “luxury car that doesn’t look like a luxury car.”
And the faux Mercedes ad concludes with the all-too-familiar disclosure: Batteries not included.
