The Range Rover Evoque that at least several people have been clamoring for is finally here, revealed just in time for winter: The two-door four-seat Evoque Convertible is due to go on sale in mid-2016 (by which time it'll be winter in Australia), and features a lightweight canvas roof that can fold up in just 18 seconds.
It will be introduced next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The Evoque Convertible will be powered exclusively by a turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder churning out 240 hp and driving all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. The automaker is taking the new Evoque's off-road chops seriously, and recently put the drop-top through its paces while still wearing camo to demonstrate that the convertible can mix it up even off British golf course-quality turf.
"The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is a vehicle for all seasons," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director and chief creative officer. "Its uniquely distinctive design and world-class engineering add another dimension to the Range Rover family, further enhancing its desirability and appeal."
The convertible top has a Z-fold mechanism which allows the canvas to fold flush with the rear bodywork, creating a clean visual look when the top is down; unfortunately there is no roll-bar with Hella spotlights -- that's something that will have to be special ordered from Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations custom division. The addition of a top does eat into the cargo space a bit, as one would expect, so the Evoque Convertible offers just 8.9 cu. ft. of luggage space. Other than that, it's just like the hardtop Evoque.
Aside from carving out a new niche for the brand, one scarcely visited except by the Mercedes-Benz G-wagen cabrio and Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, the Evoque Convertible also introduces the updated InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, paired with a 10.2 inch touchscreen. The system boasts "seamless" phone integration, as well as a premium sound system and a wi-fi hotspot.
Look for the Evoque Convertible next summer in front of that new trendy cafe that just opened in two dynamic trim levels: SE Dynamic and HSE Dynamic. The convertible will start at $52,465.
