FRANKFURT -- Mercedes-Benz USA will continue to add dealerships for the next couple of years, but CEO Steve Cannon says he then plans to bring the expansion to a halt with the brand's network topping out at around 390 stores.
Mercedes-Benz has 370 outlets in the U.S., up by four since the beginning of 2015 and by 14 since the beginning of 2012. The number has risen steadily since 2002. Cannon described the latest additions as "careful growth," with a mind toward maintaining profitability for all dealers.
"We have to address markets where we're not adequately represented," Cannon said on the sidelines of the Frankfurt auto show. "But we want throughput to go up. At the end, it's a much healthier system when you've got high throughput in a dealer body where everybody is profitable as opposed to having too many dealers."
