Toyota applies for patent that could lead to flying car

(Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. filed for a patent on a feature that could lead to flying cars.

Application 20150246720, published in the database of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Sept. 3, covers a “stackable wing for an aerocar.”

According to the application, the wing can change shape, with one configuration for when it is stacked atop the car roof and another more aerodynamic shape for when it’s deployed for flight.

When the car is in what Toyota called a “roadable mode,” additional wings can be stacked atop the first.

Toyota applied for the patent in March 2014. Its two named inventors are residents of New Jersey and Michigan.
