To the Editor:
Thanks to Automotive News for shining a bright light on a problem that has been growing within the auto industry for decades: the tendency of the companies to chew up capital with little return for investors.
One solution might be for General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Fiat Chrysler to form a single entity -- call it American Car -- to focus on collaborative solutions to the thousands of government regulations that dog the business. It could be made to include development of powertrains since the engine and transmission are usually at the heart of emissions and fuel economy standards.
To many in the industry, such a plan will seem like heresy. But manufacturing redundancy -- much of it the result of government regulation -- is dragging the industry down like an anchor. Assuming the right leadership, this plan would end some of it.
