Fiat Chrysler is recalling an estimated 144,416 Dodge Journey models in the U.S. to better secure their engine covers.
The company said Wednesday that engine covers in certain vehicles may become dislocated. If they come in contact with exhaust components, it may pose a fire risk.
Overall, the company is recalling 349,731 Journey and Fiat Freemont crossovers.
The vehicles covered by the recall are 2011-15 Dodge Journey and Fiat Freemont models equipped with 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engines. The Freemont, a rebadged Journey, is sold overseas.
The condition was discovered during an FCA investigation of three incidents in Chile. In each case, the vehicle had been driven extensively on unpaved or uneven surfaces, the company said.
Fiat Chrysler is aware of a single related injury that it described as minor.
The company will install upgraded engine-cover retainers on the vehicles.
Customers will be notified beginning next month and the service will be performed free of charge.
In addition to the the U.S., the recall covers an estimated 43,679 vehicles in Canada, 46,231 in Mexico and 115,405 outside the NAFTA zone.
Fiat Chrysler estimates 10 percent of the recalled vehicles remain in dealer inventory.
