Get ready for another luxury-sales race that goes down to the wire in 2015.
BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus were separated by just more than 1,300 sales in the first quarter. BMW was tops with sales of 78,492, Mercedes was second (78,156) and Lexus was third (77,180).
Mercedes led after two months, but BMW pulled ahead in March as the brand's sales rose 6.9 percent to 34,310 in the month.
Car sales drove BMW's March surge, increasing 37 percent to 25,837. The 3 and 4 series combo was up 47 percent to 14,835, while 5 series volume grew 32 percent to 5,100.
Lexus and Mercedes outperformed the total market in March. Lexus sales rose 8.6 percent to 31,054 and Mercedes was up 9.2 percent to 29,921.
Audi moved up to No. 4 among luxury brands for the quarter on the strength of a 20 percent increase to 17,102 sales in March. That moved Audi ahead of Acura and Cadillac for the year to date. Land Rover was another big gainer in March, soaring 54 percent to 6,778 compared with the same month last year. Rising sales of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport led the way.
