When Volkswagen poached Herbert Diess from BMW in December, the 56-year-old product development ace became the front-runner to succeed Martin Winterkorn as CEO.
VW said Diess would replace Winterkorn as head of Volkswagen brand this year while Winterkorn would continue as group CEO. Winterkorn's contract as CEO runs until 2016.
But it ain't over till it's over.
Winterkorn, 67, injected new life into CEO speculation by telling the German magazine Stern that Andreas Renschler, hired last year from Daimler, is also a potential successor.
