The automaker headquarters migration continued last week as Mercedes-Benz USA said it will leave Montvale, N.J., for Atlanta. Mercedes follows Nissan and Toyota in the move away from import companies' traditional coastal quarters -- and runs counter to Cadillac's exit from Detroit to soak up the Manhattan glitz.
CEO Steve Cannon said Mercedes will reap some logistical benefits: proximity to its biggest import processing center at the Port of Brunswick, Ga., and its factory near Tuscaloosa, Ala.
But, Cannon said, Mercedes also wants to cut costs and get into the midst of projected growth in the South: "If you believe the trends that most of the U.S. growth will happen there, this anticipates that growth."
Beginning in June, Mercedes will move to temporary offices in Atlanta. It plans to build a headquarters complex by the end of 2017.
