Subaru is the latest automaker to embrace the virtual racing scene with a hyperfuturistic concept for “Gran Turismo 6” on the PlayStation 3 game system.
Subaru VIZIV GT Vision Gran Turismo was revealed today with a series of design cues that wouldn’t be out of place in a science-fiction thriller.
The rugged VIZIV, which “weighs” 3,042 pounds, generates 591 hp. VIZIV stands for “Vision for Innovation,” Subaru’s concept car motto.
The car will be available soon in a game update.
Under the Vision Gran Turismo initiative, automakers are invited to develop concepts for PlayStation 3 gamers around the world in a celebration of the “Gran Turismo” series’ 15th anniversary.
Mercedes-Benz was the first automaker to unveil a Vision GT concept when it showed a physical mockup of the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show before the game’s December 2013 release.
Design teams from Toyota, BMW, Volkswagen, Nissan, Aston Martin and others have since joined the fray with concepts for gamers.
Subaru’s Vision Gran Turismo contribution inherited design language from the VIZIV 2 Concept crossover that debuted in March at the Geneva auto show.
The VIZIV GT was emboldened with an aggressively shaped body that makes it appear as if it was carved from “hard, solid metal,” according to an announcement on the game’s website.
The Gran Turismo announcement said the VIZIV GT was also given a “roof integrated rear spoiler” and “blister fenders extending its shape three dimensionally outward.”
Its 2-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine is combined with one motor in the front and two in the rear.
“By independently controlling each of the motor outputs, turning ability while cornering is drastically improved, while the torque vectoring lamps built into the fenders visualize its movement,” according to the game’s website. “Thus, as with any other Subaru, the car is made controllable for anyone driving the car, regardless of its extremely high performance levels.”
