EDITOR'S NOTE: This article has been corrected to reflect that Costco has opened the promotion to dealerships beyond the 300 GM stores that are part of Costco Auto.
A promotion between General Motors and Costco Wholesale Corp.'s auto-sales arm helped three GM trucks make the list of most-requested vehicles for dealership referrals among the warehouse club's members in October.
Last month, the Chevrolet Silverado was the most-requested vehicle for dealership referrals by Costco members, followed by GMC's Sierra at No. 2 and Acadia at No. 3.
Lori Grone, director of operations of the Costco Auto Program, said Costco Auto received almost 18,000 requests for dealership referrals for GM vehicles in October, muscling out Toyota and Honda vehicles, which typically rank first and second for requests.
Gina Paolino, president of Costco Auto, said the company expects its members to have bought about 35,000 program-eligible Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles when the Oct. 1-Jan. 2 promotion ends. That is up from 22,000 purchased in last year's program, which was about two weeks shorter.
Paolino said the promotion's closing ratio of referrals this year is about 55 percent so far. "In the two previous promotions it was 62 percent," she said. "With the volume we're seeing, I'm confident we'll get to 62 percent. It might even be higher. We have a good lineup" of vehicles.
Eligible for the program are the 2014 and 2015 Buick Enclave and Encore; Cadillac ATS, CTS, ELR and XTS; Chevrolet Equinox, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse and Volt; and GMC Acadia, Sierra, Terrain, Yukon and Yukon XL.
The program offers those vehicles at prices GM typically offers its suppliers, plus a Costco Cash Card good for $400 or $600, depending on the buyer's Costco membership level.
Members who buy eligible vehicles and complete a survey about their purchase receive the Costco Cash Card. That's on top of any other GM rebates and incentives for which they are eligible. The surveys allow Costco Auto to gather data about members' purchases and intentions.
Costco Auto regularly offers prearranged prices on new and certified used vehicles for members through a network of more than 3,000 new-car dealerships. Costco has opened the promotion to dealerships beyond the 300 GM stores that are part of Costco Auto, so that 2,000 GM dealerships have been approved to participate.
