In July, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Volkswagen denied they were in merger talks after a German magazine reported discussions were underway. But that hasn't stopped speculation.
In fact, John Krafcik, former CEO of Hyundai Motor America, told a media gathering in Detroit last week that he has studied the idea. His conclusion: "This is an absolutely brilliant combination. For sure, these two companies have a natural attraction to each other."
According to Bloomberg, Krafcik said he looked at the revenue and model mix of the companies' U.S. businesses. Fiat Chrysler does well in SUV sales with its Jeep brand and has a strong Ram pickup business. VW does well in the premium car segment with Audi and has a good model line of mainstream cars, he said.
Does Krafcik know something we don't?
Nope. He says his analysis was only an "academic exercise."
